Who We Are

Koloma is a data-driven natural
hydrogen exploration company
leveraging cutting-edge technology,
proprietary data, and deep industry
expertise to identify and produce
naturally occurring hydrogen in the
United States and around the world.
Founded in 2021, Koloma is pioneering
the discovery of natural hydrogen as a
new clean energy resource.

Natural Hydrogen

What Is Natural Hydrogen?
  • Natural hydrogen forms naturally when water reacts with iron-rich rocks in the Earth’s subsurface in a process called serpentinization.
  • The gas accumulates in underground reservoirs that can be reached with proven methods and technologies.
  • Unlike manufactured hydrogen, it needs minimal land, water, and energy to extract and has a low carbon footprint.
Why Is Natural Hydrogen a Low-Carbon Energy Opportunity?
  • Produces no carbon emissions at the point of use.
  • Offers a low-carbon alternative to hydrogen made from fossil fuels.
  • Can reduce dependence on foreign energy sources, minimize environmental impact, and fuel sectors from data centers and aviation to agriculture and construction.
Why Focus on California?
  • California has abundant iron-rich rocks due to the unique geology of the west coast of the North American continent.
  • Natural hydrogen has been detected in multiple geologic settings across California, especially in and around the Coast Ranges, indicating active hydrogen generation and movement underground.
  • Koloma has one of the world’s largest hydrogen data sets and has analyzed where commercial production has the greatest potential; field studies are needed to pinpoint where sub-surface hydrogen is trapped in commercial quantities.
  • The region has the potential to lead in natural hydrogen and pioneer a clean energy future.
